The Sage and the Bird Keeper by Valkyrie-Girl The Sage and the Bird Keeper by Valkyrie-Girl
And even more Valkyria!

So fun fact; the Valkyria do age despite being made of steel and lightning. While they do live a long time (a Valkyrie in her 60s is considered to be in her prime) they do eventually grow old and pass away. Here we have an aged Valkyrie, no longer able to fly into battle but who is still well respected and loved for her great wisdom (and sense of humor).

On the right we have the bird keeper, a Valkyrie too small to go into battle but who still has an important duty; tending the messenger birds. Slightly smaller than crows or ravens, these little birds have the homing instincts of pigeons and the intelligence of ravens. They can carry messages or even quote them in a pinch and it's up to this little pony to train and care for them.

So about how long do Valkyries live? My estimation is about 180 years. Am I right?

The first symbol is the Anglo-Saxon rune for "earth" and the second one is the Norse rune for "joy". I sort of loosely applied the meaning "earth" and used it to mean "humble". Put them together and you get "humble joy" or "joy in humility". She doesn't get to be a powerful warrior or the high honor of being a forge priestess but what she does, she does to the best of her abilities and always has a smile on her face.

They are my pony versions of the Valkyrie from Norse mythology. If you poke through my gallery you should find more pictures of them.

I wonder... Since they are made of steel, is rust a problem for them? Is that valkyria acne? Or do they just not rust because magic?

Ummmm I actually thought about that myself. For a while I was toying around with the idea that rust indicated age but I decided to scrap that. So no, they do not have problems with rust. When they are struck by the Life Bolt, they because living beings of flesh and blood.

I dig that you've come up with roles outside of battle. It really fleshes out this society and shows what its core values are.

Also the old lady is really cute.

More adorable ponies! Cute birds too.
So do all Valkyries have those lines for a cutie mark? The few that I could see seem to have a similar design.
Also are all Valkyia gray-scale? Their coats all seem to be white or greyish so far, well aside from Princess Raven.
I love all your designs! Thanks for being awesome!

Why yes, their cutie marks are all a combination of two runes. The means of those rune describe what their special talent is rather than a picture. Since all Valkyrie know the meanings of runes, they are just as descriptive as the picture that normal ponies have.

And yes, all Valkyria are some degree of grey. Even Raven is, she's just really dark compared to the rest. Has to do with them being born from metal.

Hmm. I really like her color scheme and she's got an extremely interesting design. However I do feel that she could use some stream lining. She seems a bit overly complex. I'd experiment a bit further, simplifying her design a bit and see how she looks.

It means to make a design simpler. Get rid of the bells and whistles and reduce it to its most iconic elements. Study the character designs of the main characters in the show. When you get down to it, most of them are pretty simple. Even the princesses who at fist glance seem more complex are still quite simple when you get rid of their accessories. My valkyrie ponies are the same way. Any complexity that you see in them comes from their armor and jewelry. The ponies themselves are very plain, even their cutie marks are simple runic lines.

I hope this is helpful and not super confusing.

Well you own her now, yes? Which means you can do whatever you like with her. I think the basic idea is great, she just needs to be refined a bit more.
