At Home In Niflheim by Valkyrie-Girl At Home In Niflheim by Valkyrie-Girl
Done for the contest going on over at :iconwe-heart-valkyries: .

A bio is required for said contest so here it goes;

Name: Gondul
Age: She forgot a long time ago
Weapon of choice: Spear and shield and eventually Odin's spear Gungnir.
Backstory: There was once a Viking clan that learned how to change themselves into wolves during battle by donning wolf skins. After many generations of such transformations it came to pass that the clan was able to transform without the aid of the wolf skins however this also caused them to be vicious and bloodthirsty. For many years they terrorized their neighboring clans until finally the other clans banded together and waged war against the wolf clan. Though they were fierce warriors, the wolf clan was quickly overthrown. Gondul was born of the last surviving members of the clan then orphaned at a young age. Because she was only a child no one wanted to be the one to kill her however none would take her in for fear of what she was. So she wandered alone, helpless and starving. The goddess Hel found her one day on the brink of death. Hel took pity on her, feeling sympathy for a creature that had been judged for something she had no power over just as she herself had been in her youth. Hel saved Gondul and took her back to her kingdom. But she could not bear to see a child grow up in Niflheim so she called upon the aid of her old friend the goddess Freya. At Hel’s request, Freya took Gondul to Asgard, granted her immortality and raised her among the valkyrie but she never hid the fact that it was Hel who was responsible for saving her life. In Asgard, Gondul was given a good life but many of the Aesir held her at arm’s length, refusing to accept her because she had been a mortal and that she was a werewolf. Once she was old enough to travel the nine realms she often sought refuge from Aesir judgement in Niflheim with Hel. She looked up to Hel and felt a strong kinship with her.
Eventually Gondul made friends with several other young valkyrie with whom she had many adventures however she always maintained her connection with friend and mentor Hel even into adulthood. Hel is the only person she truly feels comfortable with and the first person she will go to for advice.

----

This would be one of those visits to Niflheim. One of the rare times that Gondul allows herself to relax and laugh a little.

I like platonic love. I really love the way you scared Hel's face and skeleton hand. That's also a nice background story for Gondul.

Thank you very much! Both of these characters have actually undergone quite a bit of redesign since I did this piece.

I have this thought recently of Hel having a real daughter and being very protective of her. Maybe she'll end up like Gondul here.

Oh? Who would said daughter's father be?

Don't know.  It could be anything, a man, a woman, a plant, anything. Besides, her father gave birth to a horse, so anything seems plausible.

This is true. Norse mythology (or any mythology for that matter) can be fruity like that.

Pretty good illustration and bio, I also have a valkyrie named Göndul: [link] though instead of making her human, I played with one of her name's meanings, "she-were-wolf".

I saw that actually. And I did read that first chapter that you put up not too long ago. I enjoyed it and would like to read more.

As a note, my Gondul is a werewolf she can just shift from her human to wolf form at will. She just doesn't do it unless she really has to because of her experiences as a child.

Mmm glad to see that people actually get interested in my story ; _ ; (since no one leaves a comment telling if they liked or not...).

Well, my Göndul can turn into a bigger wolf on full moon nights, entering in a berserk-like state and unable to know who's friend and who's not. When the time comes she prefers to be alone in the forest / another place so that she won't harm any friend.

Way back when I was first developing Gondul I considered the full moon thing but then I did some research on the old Norse equivalent of werewolves (pretty much what I described in Gondul's bio and I can't remember what they're called for the life of me) and they have nothing to do with the moon. It's really interesting to see that both of us found the name Gondul and picked up on the werewolf thing but then that we took it in two very different directions.

Also I meant to comment but then I kept forgetting. How about I go do that now, shall I?

Ow, they have nothing to do with the moon? :faint: Sigh, well since I haven't officially done her reference sheet and bio I guess I could change that ^^; And yeah it's interesting to see that we both have a valkyrie named Göndul, hehehe :giggle:

I do hope to finish my other valkyries' design during summer... of Reginleif, Brunhilde and my dark valkyrie Skögul ^^;

Yeah go ahead!! :love: I'd be very happy to hear your opinion~ !!

True story. They're called úlfhednar (I found it!) and are pretty much the wolf equivalent of berserkers (meaning "Bear-shirts" - warriors who could turn themselves into bears in battle). If you go back to the more traditional accounts of werewolves from around the world, there are actually very few that connect them with the moon. That's a much more modern attribute along with their vulnerability to silver. However if that's how you want your character to be I don't see any reason why you shouldn't leave her as she is.

Wow. All this talk of valkyrie has really made me want to work on mine more.
