At Home In Niflheim by Valkyrie-Girl At Home In Niflheim by Valkyrie-Girl
Done for the contest going on over at :iconwe-heart-valkyries: .

A bio is required for said contest so here it goes;

Name: Gondul
Age: She forgot a long time ago
Weapon of choice: Spear and shield and eventually Odin's spear Gungnir.
Backstory: There was once a Viking clan that learned how to change themselves into wolves during battle by donning wolf skins. After many generations of such transformations it came to pass that the clan was able to transform without the aid of the wolf skins however this also caused them to be vicious and bloodthirsty. For many years they terrorized their neighboring clans until finally the other clans banded together and waged war against the wolf clan. Though they were fierce warriors, the wolf clan was quickly overthrown. Gondul was born of the last surviving members of the clan then orphaned at a young age. Because she was only a child no one wanted to be the one to kill her however none would take her in for fear of what she was. So she wandered alone, helpless and starving. The goddess Hel found her one day on the brink of death. Hel took pity on her, feeling sympathy for a creature that had been judged for something she had no power over just as she herself had been in her youth. Hel saved Gondul and took her back to her kingdom. But she could not bear to see a child grow up in Niflheim so she called upon the aid of her old friend the goddess Freya. At Helís request, Freya took Gondul to Asgard, granted her immortality and raised her among the valkyrie but she never hid the fact that it was Hel who was responsible for saving her life. In Asgard, Gondul was given a good life but many of the Aesir held her at armís length, refusing to accept her because she had been a mortal and that she was a werewolf. Once she was old enough to travel the nine realms she often sought refuge from Aesir judgement in Niflheim with Hel. She looked up to Hel and felt a strong kinship with her.
Eventually Gondul made friends with several other young valkyrie with whom she had many adventures however she always maintained her connection with friend and mentor Hel even into adulthood. Hel is the only person she truly feels comfortable with and the first person she will go to for advice.

----

This would be one of those visits to Niflheim. One of the rare times that Gondul allows herself to relax and laugh a little.

I like platonic love. I really love the way you scared Hel's face and skeleton hand. That's also a nice background story for Gondul.

Thank you very much! Both of these characters have actually undergone quite a bit of redesign since I did this piece.

I have this thought recently of Hel having a real daughter and being very protective of her. Maybe she'll end up like Gondul here.

Oh? Who would said daughter's father be?

Don't know.  It could be anything, a man, a woman, a plant, anything. Besides, her father gave birth to a horse, so anything seems plausible.

This is true. Norse mythology (or any mythology for that matter) can be fruity like that.

Well Skyrim is very heavily influenced by ancient Norse culture and mythology.
